This Workshop, mostly addressed to research funders (public and private), will present an overview of the challenges in terms of sustainable funding of infrastructure research and innovation and their impact. It aims at contributing to put IENE association as a central place for pan-european research action coordination.
According to the G20, the forthcoming investment of over $94 trillion worldwide in the transport and energy sectors represents a major opportunity for stimulus packages such as the EU Green Deal. However, the 50% increase in networks by 2040 is also a major challenge for biodiversity and the environment. Sustainability research and policy in the transport and energy sector must now take into account both biodiversity and climate issues in a much more ambitious and coordinated way.
But from an operational point of view, the critical weakness of research has several consequences, marked in particular by the weakness of the industrial actors able to answer to the needs and its almost fractal fragmentation in the various member states.
After two short preliminary presentations: the EU R&I funding opportunities critical mapping and the feedback of the French National Research Programme on infrastructure and ecosytems, we will organise a debate and discussion. Those exchanges will explore how local, national, corporate or European fundings can be coordinated or optimized to ensure the development of a pan European research and innovation community able to answer to growing needs. The expected result is the elaboration of a concrete roadmap for IENE as a European central place for research.
